Civil Unions and Same-Sex Marriages Essay
Questions about morality, family relationships, freedom of expression, and sexuality are at stake in the gay marriage debate. The main argument of the issue of same sex marriage is how much we should allow the government to control in issues like marriage in our private lives. ââ¬Å"At Issue: Gay Marriageâ⬠, which is a book written by Debra Miller in 2012, includes a broad spectrum of views on the subject. One of the biggest issues in the gay marriage debate is the meaning of the separation of church and state in the United States. Some organizations and churches argue that state support of same-sex marriage is a breach of their religious freedoms which are protected by the US Constitution and if they are forced by laws enacted to include same sex marriages that they are being forced to accept acts that are against their religious beliefs. In a statement made concerning same sex marriage; some religious organizations and churches claimed that homosexual acts go against their religious beliefs and the natural moral law and that they should not be forced to perform marriages that go against their beliefs. Religious organizations say that to legalize homosexual marriage is religious persecution in their eyes. People that approve of gay marriage make the point that marriage is a legal right and a religious right as well because church and the state are separate. Activists argue that homosexual couples have a right to a marriage the same as heterosexual couples do. Another point that is called on is that people do not have to marry in a church but can do so in a court house as well and that no church or religious organization is bound to marry any couple. They are basically saying that churches are not forced to do anything against their belief system. One side will argue against federal laws that encompass and over rule state laws. Others will argue that each state should be able to make and enforce laws that concern each state as they see fit within their state governmental departments, like those concerning marriage laws. President Bush believed and stated that ââ¬Å"the voice of the people is being compromised by the actions of a few judges in isolated casesâ⬠, (President George Bush, 2003). Former President Bush believes that laws like these could threaten every state in the union because of the ââ¬Å"full faith and creditâ⬠clause in Article IV of the Constitution, (The United States Constitution, Article III, Section 2, 2013), which requires all states to honor the laws of every other state. President Bush said in an interview that the full faith and credit clause would require all states same-sex marriages performed anywhere in America. Bush, 2003) Civil Unions include heterosexual and same sex unions according to The Department of Internal Affairs, (The Department of Internal Affairs, 2004). Civil Unions differ from marriage because they are entered into by two people who chose to live together as man and wife and present themselves to the public and in private this way without an official marriage or marriage license. They consider themselves married but the government, whether state, local, or federal do not. At one time heterosexual civil unions were accepted and now are no longer recognized in most states. What this means is that people with a marriage license issued by the state are guaranteed certain rights, responsibilities, and privileges that people in civil unions are not given. These rights extend to the work place where insurance is guaranteed to a spouse of heterosexuals that are married but not to civil unions between same or opposite sex couples working in the same place. If same sex marriage and civil unions are both accepted and laws are enacted to approve of them then I believe this opens the doors to many other types of behaviors in the future that will do more harm than good to our society. These behaviors would include the right of an older person to marry a child for instance or to marry an animal or inanimate object even. We must ask ourselves one question and that is where we are willing to draw the line in our inclusions and amendments to the laws that were written to protect us in the beginning. The more we accept the more we are willing to accept as a society.

INTRODUCTION General Chemistry I L aboratory (CHM 1045L) is the first course of a sequence of two laboratory courses primarily for students who are in science or science-related majors. In this laboratory course, students will have an opportunity to observe some of the phenomena of matter and obtain practical skills in using various items of laboratory equipment. Upon completion of this course students should have a deeper and more concrete understanding of the experimental science of chemistry. There are 10 different laboratory exercises scheduled to be done during the weeks specified in the SCHEDULE section of this outline. Because of the large number of laboratory sections and the full use of time available during the semester, there will be no opportunity to make individual laboratory exercises. Only in cases of emergency, you must notify your instructor before the class session. In such case, the laboratory experiment should be made up during the week that it was assigned. In order to make up the experiment, thes e procedures should be followed: *Notify your instructor and get a note from them stating their approval and awareness of your absence. *Obtain an official excuse from your dean. Bring the excuse and the note to laboratory coordinators office in JONES HALL room 405. *At this time, you will receive a form with the time that you can make your experiment up. Appointments for office visits other than during scheduled office hours may be made on an individual basis for the mutual convenience of the students and instructor. LABORATORY OBJECTIVES There are several objectives of the laboratory course. Among these are to: a. Train students to observe and follow the standard safety practices while doing experiments. b. Provide a means for students to examine, analyze, and verify chemical principles by carrying out simple exercises in the laboratory. c.Provide an opportunity for students to practice making careful observations and measurements, and to perform critical analyses of the observati ons made and data obtained. d. Train students to carry out laboratory exercises using standard techniques, while keeping a record of the observations made and data obtained. Academic Learning Compact As a result of your experience at FAMU chemistry students should be able to communicate chemical concepts in oral and written laboratory reports. Your reports should discern what you think happened from what indeed did occur based on sound chemical reasoning. You are to interpret laboratory data, measurements, procedures and results. Eventually, you should solve chemical problems and design and evaluate experiments. After taking this class you will be able to recognize potentially hazardous substances and reactions. You should be able to make effective use of information resources and use a computer to gain information about chemical compounds and reactions. LABORATORY MATERIALS The following materials will be required for the laboratory: a. Laboratory safety glasses b. The laboratory ma nual, Experiments In General Chemistry, 6th Edition by Peter Cottrell, Jesse Edwards, & Richard A. Ford, Jr. , which is available at the University Bookstore. c. Laboratory coat d. Students not having eye protection and laboratory coat cannot remain in the laboratory. a. Wear approved eye protection at all times. b. Never eat, drink or smoke in a chemical laboratory c. If any glassware is broken, it should be cleaned up by the student. d. Never perform an unauthorized experiment. e. Never work in a chemical laboratory without proper supervision f. Never pipette by mouth or inhale gases or vapors g. Exercise proper care in heating or mixing chemicals h. Be careful with glass equipment PROCEUDURE Each laboratory experiment must be read and carefully studied before coming to t he laboratory. This must be done to ensure that each student is thoroughly familiar with the principles, procedures, calculations, and anything else with the exercises may be involved. Unless otherwise directed to do so, students should work alone in doing in the laboratory exercises. Take extreme care when using the analytical balances, thermometers, and other items of equipment that are expensive and/or may be easily broken. When the laboratory exercise is completed, all equipment should be cleaned and put in its proper place or in the locker in an orderly way. The bench top and common work areas should also be cleaned. LABORATORY REPORTS The pre-laboratory assignments of each laboratory experiment must be turned in to the instructor before the beginning of the laboratory.Laboratory Reports are to be completed and turned in as directed by the instructor. The laboratory report will usually consist of the Pre-Lab, Post-Lab, Lab Write-up, Data Sheet from the laboratory experiment and calculations sheet. Laboratory Report Organization: All sections should be typed except calculations, pre/post lab and your data/report sheet â⬠¢ Title Page: Your name, Group members names, Date, Lab section Title of the Experiment â⬠¢ Introduction- 5-6 sentences at most â⬠¢ Materials and Procedure- Past Tense, Bullet format â⬠¢ Pre-Lab, Report Sheet and Post Lab ââ¬âplease complete all calculations and questions in the spaces provided. If the space is too small, please complete on a separate sheet of paper. When recording the measurements made, the accuracy of the devise used has to be reflected. Although the metric system used here in America is the most common, scientists prefer the use the International System of Units or SI system. The objective of this lab is to perfect the use of the laboratory balance, graduate cylinder, thermometer and pipets in order to learn how to obtain accurate measurements in experimental procedures. This lab will also allow familiarization with the SI units used in scientific work. APPARATUS/MATERIALS Balance150-mL Beaker 250-mL Beaker Bunsen Burner Hose clampFlask 125-mL 50-mL Erlenmeyer Grad. Cylinder Rubber BulbIron ringRing S tand 10-mL Pipet ThermometerWing TipIce Barometer PROCEDURE A. The Bunsen Burner â⬠¢ The Bunsen burner was examined for valves and all gas/air outlets â⬠¢ Both valves were closed and rubber tubing was attached from the gas outlet on the burner to the lab bench spout. â⬠¢ A striker was used to light the gas below the top of the barrel while the gas valve on the burner was gradually opened to obtain a flame roughly 3-4 inches high. The air was adjusted to allow a pale blue flame to form on the inner cone. B. The GraduatedCylinder â⬠¢ The 100-mL graduated cylinder was examined and the markings in milliliters was noted â⬠¢ The cylinder was then filled approximately half full with water and the meniscus(curved surface) was observed. â⬠¢ Reading the lowest point of the meniscus at eye level with the cylinder a volume measurement was obtained to the nearest 0. 1mL and recorded â⬠¢ A 125-mL Erlenmeyer flask was then filled to the top with water and the graduate c ylinder was used to aid in recording the total volume in the flask. C. The Thermometer and Its Calibration To test the accuracy of the thermometer, it was calibrated using known measurements â⬠¢ 50mL of ice was placed in a 250mL beaker and covered with distilled water. â⬠¢ The ice-water mixture was allowed to set and come to equilibrium and measurements were taken and recorded. â⬠¢ To test the boiling point, a 250-mL beaker ws set on a wire gause and iron ring half full with distilled water. â⬠¢ The water was heated and measurements were periodically taken to determine the temperature of the water . â⬠¢ The boiling point of water was recorded and a bp correction calculation was performed to determine the true boiling point at the observed pressure. D. Using the Balance to Calibrate the 10-mL Pipet â⬠¢ A penny was weighed and the mass recorded About 40mL of distilled water was put in a 50-mL beaker â⬠¢ The weight of an empty, dry 50 mL Erlenmeyer flask was weighted to the nearest 0. 1 mL â⬠¢ The temperature of the water in the beaker was measured and recorded. â⬠¢ Exactly 10 mL of water was pipet into the empty flask and the flask was weighed with the water. â⬠¢ The weight of the water was determined by subtraction the mass of the empty flask from the mass obtained after the 10 mL of water was added. â⬠¢ The density was calculated, and based on the temperature obtained previously, the accuracy of the pipet was determined. â⬠¢ This procedure was repeated three more times CALCULATIONS: WRITE ALL CALCULATIONS IN THIS SECTION. NO NEED TO TYPE THEM OUT.CONCLUSION: The objective of this lab was to learn the use of simple lab equipment. In this experiment our group was able to learn basic laboratory protocols and become familiar with common equipment operation. We were able to successfully calibrate and standardize the equipment for future measurements to be taken. Overall there were minor errors that could have occurred including the following: not reading the bottom of the meniscus on the graduated cylinder procedure and dropping some water while transferring to flasks in procedure D. We completed all procedures proficiently otherwise and look forward to a semester of future experimentation.

A corporation headed by five members Essay
Fahrenheit Technologies is a corporation headed by five members, all of whom are shareholders and primary members of the Board of Directors. Established in 2012, these five members who have developed a bond in their college years, decided to combine their diverse set of skills and go into business together. Thus, Fahrenheit Technologies was born. We decided upon that name because our carrier product is the ââ¬Å"Thermo-Mugâ⬠ââ¬â a travel mug/tumbler that can keep your hot beverage warm for much longer than a regular tumbler thanks to its re-heating feature. We also have plans for other innovative heating appliances in the future, which is why we felt that our company name ââ¬Å"Fahrenheitâ⬠was appropriate. Key Business Operations: We will provide our customers with products positioned as innovative, functional in purpose, distinctive in quality and design and not widely available from other retailers. We aim to produce the highest quality products to our market as efficiently as possible. The company shall operate in the Ortigas business district but can also offer transactions outside the metro. Fahrenheit Technologies will be headquartered in 778 B, Mahogany Street, Octagon Village, Barangay Dela Paz, Pasig City. Aside from our headquarters being an industrially conducive environment, it is also close to our operational area. Along with catering to other businesses from our headquarters, we also have plans to expand Fahrenheit Technologies by having small, physical stores in places such as malls and plazas in order to be able to offer our products to a wider audience. Our labor force includes employees and workers under their respective departments, supervised by 4 Directors as department heads. In Finance, we plan to employ 1 certified public accountant. In Marketing/Sales, we will be assisted by 1 other employee while in Human Resource/Administration, 2 more employees will be hired. The concentration of our employees (10) is situated in our Operations/Quality Control department. (19total) Type of Business: Fahrenheit Technologies is a corporation that primarily caters to other businesses. The members of this corporation are headed by the aforementioned five major shareholders and 17 employees in totality. As a corporation catering to other businesses, we can eliminate the middle man and overcome mediating expenses, which in turn reduces overall cost. Also, with todayââ¬â¢s technological advancements, it is getting easier and cheaper to conduct business with platforms such as E-commerce. With the B2B marketing strategy, we lower the cost for both selling and marketing, which in turn, maximizes our capital. Also called B to B or B2B ââ¬â these are a type of commerce transaction that exists between businesses, such as those involving a manufacturer and wholesaler, or a wholesaler and a retailer. Business to business refers to business that is conducted between companies, rather than between a company and individual consumers. This is in contrast to business to consumer (B2C) and business to government (B2G). A typical supply chain involves multiple business to business transactions, as companies purchase components and other raw materials for use in its manufacturing processes. The finished product can then be sold to individuals via business to consumer transactions. An example that illustrates the business to business concept is automobile manufacturing. Many of a vehicleââ¬â¢s components are manufactured independently and the auto manufacturer must purchase these parts separately. For instance, the tires, batteries, electronics, hoses and door locks may be manufactured elsewhere and sold directly to the automobile manufacturer. In the context of communication, business to business refers to methods by which employees from different companies can connect with one another, such as through social media. This type of communication between the employees of two or more companies is called B2B communication. Organizational Chart Fahrenheit Technologies uses horizontal organizational chart. A business that is structured as a flat or horizontal organization is where power is shared more broadly and tends to allow staff more control over business matters according to their expertise, and often supportive of considerable collaboration between employees. It is, in essence, a decentralized power structure among the 4 main department heads and the president. Job Descriptions: The president of the business will be Victor Ros, whose responsibilities include creating, communicating, and implementing the organizationââ¬â¢s vision, mission, and overall direction, leading, guiding, directing, and evaluating the work of other executive leaders including directors, formulating and implementing the strategic plan that guides the direction of the business, forming, staffing, guiding, leading, and managing the organization sufficiently in order to accomplish the strategic plans of the business. He also oversees that the budgets and resources are properly allocated and ensures the complete operation of Fahrenheit Technologies in accordance with the direction established by the board. Lastly, he is the one who is held responsible for overall accountability to shareholders and the general public. Operations director will be Harold Bautista whose duties include assuring that our products meet the highest safety and quality standards. He understands the goals of the organization and develops a clear vision of exactly how operations will help achieve them. This also involves translating these goals into implications for the operationââ¬â¢s performance, objectives, quality, speed, dependability, flexibility and cost. He oversees the daily operations in assembly and is in charge of inspections of products and parts purchased from our suppliers, as well as keeping records of supplier performance. He also plans and directs activities concerned with development, application, and maintenance of quality standards for industrial processes, materials, and products. The Finance Director is Gerone Santos who is responsible for providing the flow of financial information to the president, the board and, where necessary, external parties such as investors or financial institutions. His main responsibilities include overall control of the corporationââ¬â¢s accounting functions, transactions and accountancy matters, including audit systems. He also is in charge of formulating financial targets and budgets, manages company policies regarding capital requirements, debt, taxation, equity and acquisitions, as appropriate. Also, aside from preparing annual accounts, he is also responsible for ensuring that the regulatory requirements of all statutory bodies are met regarding all the corporationââ¬â¢s financial affairs. Job Descriptions: Human Resource Director will be Kevin Dela Torre whose main responsibilities include ensuring the smooth and profitable operation of the companyââ¬â¢s human resources department. He supervises and provides consultation to management on strategic staffing plans, compensation, benefits, training and development, budget, and labor relations. He is also expected to take a leadership role in developing a culture that enables employees to perform in accordance to a firmââ¬â¢s objectives. Furthermore, he is also in charge of the effective planning, designing, developing and evaluating human resource-related initiatives that support organizational strategic goals. In addition, he also leads performance management, talent assessment and effective labor relationships, including negotiating and administering labor agreements. Our HR director will also supervise staff and report to the president on issues regarding implementation of policies and procedures, safety of the workforce, recruiting and hiring high-performing employees, and labor, legislative and other human resources issues. The Marketing Director is Francisco Andres whose responsibilities are boosting the sales of the companyââ¬â¢s services and products by establishing brand recognition, optimization of the corporationââ¬â¢s market share using research on the competition comes and making sure that Fahrenheit Technologies is one step ahead in innovation and marketing. He is also in charge with annual marketing plans and supervising these plans so that they come to fruition. In addition, he also helps promote a positive image of the corporation not only to the consumers but within the company itself, he increases or maintains positive levels of customer satisfaction by providing impeccable customer support thru customer relationship management (CRM). He is also responsible for reviewing existing plans and strategies to make sure that we remain competitive and at par, even more, with your competitors. This last step includes final considerations including: Review of application letter, resume, clearances, Transcript of Records Interview by the HRDO head Psychological test by the HRDO Director Second level decision based on results of test by the HRDO Director HRDO reviews medical and other requirements Final decision by the office concerned Orientation: Most employees are nervous on the first day of a new job. We make this transition easier by conducting a detailed orientation program. This lifts the burden from the employee of having to figure things out on his own. It also sends a positive message to the employee about Fahrenheit Technologiesââ¬â¢ organizational structure. Before the employee begins work, the human resources department or the employeeââ¬â¢s manager is to contact him to answer any questions he may have concerning dress code, document requirements, where he should be on the first day and what time to arrive. Performance Appraisal: Fahrenheit Technologies will conduct its performance appraisals based on their employeesââ¬â¢ output. This type of appraisal focuses on job products as the primary criteria. The most commonly used output-based appraisal is Management-by-Objectives (MBO). This specifies the performance goals that an individual hopes to attain within an appropriate length of time. The objectives that each manager sets are derived from the overall goals and objectives of the organization. Implementation of an MBO appraisal system is comprised of four basic stages. Job Review and Agreement: In the first phase the employee and the supervisor review the job description and the key activities that comprise the employeeââ¬â¢s job. The idea is to agree on the exact makeup of the employeeââ¬â¢s job. Development of Performance Standards: Specific standards of performance must be mutually developed. This phase specifies a satisfactory level of performance that is specific and measurable. Guided Objective Setting: Objectives are established by the employee in conjunction with, and guided by, the supervisor. Objectives should be realistically attainable and may be different from the set performance standard. Continuing Performance Discussions: The employee and the supervisor use the objectives as bases for continuing discussions about the employeeââ¬â¢s performance. Although a formal review session may be scheduled, the employee and the manager do not necessarily wait until the appointed time for performance discussion. The total size of our office is 273.37 square meters. -add narrative -benefits/advantages of layout Introduction to Marketing Aspect As mentioned, Fahrenheit Technologies is a corporation that primarily caters to other businesses (B2B). These are a type of commerce transaction that exists between businesses, such as those involving a manufacturer and wholesaler, or a wholesaler and a retailer. Business to business refers to business that is conducted between companies, rather than between a company and individual consumers. In order to be successful with your B2B marketing plan, you need to begin with getting answers to questions about just how you will define your marketing success. Thinking about your business and committing your marketing goals and budget to paper is the first meaningful step towards a plan to succeed. Planning your marketing will also eliminate knee-jerk spending that usually results in wasting scarce financial resources that do not produce a return on investment. This is where all the information gathered about the current market is vital. In this part of the study we will discuss the factors that affect the feasibility of our business. One of the first factors that need attention is the industry analysis. Industry analysis involves reviewing information on current economic market conditions. Industries studied can include retail, fast food, manufacturing, various repair services and construction. The type and number of business industries analyzed depends on the local economic market. Markets with large groups of consumers or several demographic groups often have more business industries than smaller economic markets. Free market economies are built on the concept of supply and demand. Markets with high consumer demand often have more companies in particular industries. And when it comes to supply and demand, that is also one of the most important parts of economics and how it measures the strength of a market economy. Supply and demand set the price and the amount of a good that will be produced. When the demand is high the price will be less, but when the price is high the demand will be less. Market Overview general view of the market possible customers in a general sense charts and graphs according to survey Market Segmentation charts and graphs according to survey more centralized according to target markets Target Markets -charts and graphs according to survey -actual businesses weââ¬â¢ve targeted The Fahrenheit Technologies targets the big and small companies that can sell the thermo-mug to its clients. The biggest client of Fahrenheit Technologies is the travel airlines, coffee shops and tea shops. Some other business that will buy our product that they will be using in there promotional activities for the customers. Promotional Activities Push Strategy: Push strategy uses companyââ¬â¢s sales force to create customer demand for product. In it the manufacturer promotes the products to distributors, the distributors to wholesalers, the wholesalers to retailers and in last retailers to customers. This strategy requires less expenditure as no major advertisement is made. But still to adopt push strategy all supply chain members have to give special offers to the buyers, they have to give discounted offers and closeout deals, etc. This strategy is also very effective in wholesale business as the wholesalers have to sell products to retailers and until or unless they offer something special to retailers they will not buy from them. So adopting promotional activities is very important for wholesale suppliers. Sales Promotion Business-to-business markets sales promotions are also used as a means of moving customers to action. However, the promotional choices available to the B-to-B marketer are not as extensive as those found in the consumer or trade markets. For example, most B-to-B marketers do not use coupons as a vehicle for sales promotion with the exception of companies that sell to both consumer and business customers (e.g., products sold through office supply retailers). Rather, the techniques more likely to be utilized include: price-reductions, free product, promotional products and trade shows. Of the promotions listed, trade shows are by far the mostly widely used sales promotion for B-to-B marketers. Sales promotion has been in constant growth since the 1960ââ¬â¢s and has today become one of the key factors in the promotional mix. The methods used have become more sophisticated and an increasing number of companies are realizing the importance of a well structured promotion strategy. It was also found that the focus is not always on using sales promotion tools to generate sales, but to improve relationships. As for the tools used, it was found that there are commonly used sales promotional tools in B2B settings. Promotional Activities Advertising ââ¬â advertise the product, service or brand in newspapers, radio, television, magazines, outdoor signage and website. Personal selling or Telemarketing ââ¬â Face-to-face selling in which a seller attempts to persuade a buyer to make a purchase. Publicity ââ¬â created by sending media releases to print and broadcasting media, giving interviews to the media and from word-of-mouth. Short-term sales Promotions ââ¬â market your product or service using coupons, competitions, discounts, and contests. Direct Marketing ââ¬â involves sending letters, emails, pamphlets and brochures to individual target clients, often followed by personal selling or telemarketing. X-Deals ââ¬â this involves releasing our products to established retailers in exchange for a percentage of the profit. This percentage ranges for each retailer but also promises immediate exposure to the market. Sample products: 135,000 php (300 pcs @ P450 per mug) Free/Giveaways -The company will be giving away sample products in prospective clients. Trade shows: 20,000 php -when there is trade show the company will participate by installing a both to display the products. SWOT Analysis http://www.cps.ca.gov/workforceplanning/documents/ToolKitEnvScanSWOT.pdf STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES Everyone uses tumbler especially when theyââ¬â¢re drinking coffee Attractive because of its electronic capabilities Simple but very useful The market is not existing resulting to difficulty to build a string market OPPORTUNITIES THREATS There are no other tumbler that has the capability to reheat liquids such as coffee or water. Not so expensive so the chance of expanding is high Potential on the B2B transaction through a retail outlet Can be sell on a study store or any bookstore There might have competition online or local. There are simple tumblers that only function to hold your coffee or any other drinks Distribution Channel The Distribution Channel of the Fahrenheit Electronics Company is using a Business-to-Business Marketing which it describes transactions between business, including the manufacturer-wholesaler transaction relationship and, or wholesaler-retailer transaction relationship. The same as the Business-to-Consumer marketing, B2B can also employ different channels, such as physical store or e-commerce as the company acquire. The difference is that B2Bââ¬â¢s transaction is in bulk therefore involving large sums of money which is how the company transacts. Industry Analysis TRENDS Small kitchen appliances continued to have a small contribution to overall volume sales of consumer appliances in 2012, because almost all of these products are considered unnecessary or have direct and indirect substitutes which are cheaper or are readily available in most homes. Nonetheless, the category posted volume growth of 5% in 2012. This can be attributed to the increasing need for convenient products due to Filipinosââ¬â¢ busier lifestyles. COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE Ever Good Unlimited remained the leader in small kitchen appliances in 2012, with a 29% volume share. The company was able to maintain its position due to the strong following for its Imarflex brand, its long-standing presence in the country, and extensive distribution across different channels. In 2012, Ever Good Unlimited and Northern Islands, its closest competitor, each registered a market share increase of two percentage points. However, Northern Islands experienced a slightly stronger sales volume growth of 5.4%. PROSPECTS Small kitchen appliances are expected to record a volume CAGR of 4% over the forecast period. This stable growth can be attributed to more Filipinos switching to electric kettles, the biggest category, because of the convenience that these devices offer, especially to those with hectic schedules. The countryââ¬â¢s good economic outlook is also anticipated to stimulate demand, as consumers will be more willing to spend due to better financial stability. Hence, household penetration is expected to improve in the next five years. http://www.euromonitor.com/small-kitchen-appliances-non-cooking-in-the-philippines/report Industry Analysis Consumer Appliances in the Philippines Consumer appliances records modest volume and value growth in 2012 Consumer appliances in the Philippines recorded modest volume growth in 2012. This growth can be attributed to better economic conditions, the residential property boom in the country, the green initiatives of the government and manufacturers, and the prevalence of flexible payment options from major banks and chained electrical goods retailers. The increase in value sales, on the other hand, was mainly driven by greater demand for energy-efficient and feature-heavy models, which commonly command higher unit prices. (Source: http://www.euromonitor.com/consumer-appliances-in-the-philippines/report) Top Appliances Stores in the Philippines The EMCOR Store Head Office In Davao City. EMCOR has over 100 branches spread across the Philippines. There are a number of appliance stores in the Philippines that carry nearly all product lines. They offer prices at almost the same rates like their competitors. Nevertheless, not all of these companies share the same excellence when it comes to products and services. Quality products, excellent service and amazing promotions are some of the aspects that set them aside from the rest. Below are the Top 3 one-stop shop appliance stores operating all over the Philippines today. We considered the following criteria for ranking the companies: Network size, Products, Service, Online transaction capability, and Industry tenure. 1. EMCOR Inc. is considered to be the most extensive retail appliance, computer, furniture and motorcycle store in the Philippines. They have been serving the Filipino people for 52 years. This company has a total of 106 stores operating all over Visayas, Mindanao and Palawan areas with a sister company in Luzon, the KServico, that has a total of 100 stores in Metro Manila and Luzon area. It has developed the online transaction feature recently and is beginning to receive orders for overseas customers. They have the customer service officers or CSOââ¬â¢s to attend to the customers even after the sale. EMCOR carries all major brands for all product lines. One reason that separates this company among the others is their Instalment Plan. EMCOR offers Industry Analysis installment plan of up to 30 months for motorcycles and 18 months for appliances, furniture and computers. In addition, they recently added Western Union to their service in order to cater the remittances of our sisters and brothers working abroad. 2. Abenson, Inc., one of the companies of Benison Group of Companies, has engaged in retailing of appliances and consumer products in the Philippines for 35 years now. They have 64 branches in Luzon, Cebu and Tagbilaran only. They operate inside department stores for the convenience of the people. They also have their online store which will enable customers to shop for appliances in the Philippine, both local and abroad.SM Appliance stores carry all kinds of products from small to major items. These companies continue to grow in spite of the economic challenges our industry are experiencing right now. They continue to serve the global market with quality products and excellent services. These facts are the reasons why the aforementioned companies are among the top appliance stores in the Philippines. Market Risks The advent of advanced electronics technology in the country brought various introduction of innovative electronic products to the market. This trend does not allow the majority of manufacturing companies to maximize their time to introduce another product. This is mainly because there is an increasing intense competition in the industry. There exists a diverse competitors ranging from huge global corporations to specialized companies within the Philippines. Competitors are increasingly manufacturing products, including sophisticated ones, in low-cost jurisdictions. This becomes one of the risks that the company shall look into. Other risks, manufacturing in particular, include two main issues: First is the price of the major commodity, and raw materials. Since the materials to be used in the product are not solely produced by the company, the fluctuation of global exchange rate might affect the price of raw materials that are mostly imported by large manufacturing companies in other countries. Secondly, quality control checks have been introduced at all stages of appliance assembly in the country. The environment of the town will also alter, it is true that there are some negative effects, because a large assembly area will pollute the environment and the traffic will rise. The most obvious advantages of the new assembly area are the economy developments. Nowadays, unemployment is increasing therefore almost every town require new job opportunities. the positive effect to the local economy is tremendous. New workplaces born and the extant industry is also improving by the increased commerce. In addition, environmental change is also performed because the government has more found to spend from the growth of the industrial tax and the drop of the unemployment benefits. On the other hand, the new construction will have disadvantages. For instance, the pollution will rise and the traffic of the town is probably increasing. The construction of the new assembly area is often noisy and perhaps taking for a year to being built. After it is finished, the employees are starting to work and as a result, the traffic of the rush hours will grow. Furthermore, the factory will begin to pollute the environment. Not only the assembly area itself, but also the new volume of transport. All things considered, building a new assembly area is beneficial to the community in spite of its adverse affect, because in our days, people well-being depends on work opportunities and economy state. If the fund of the town is good, the environment pollution can be reduced by developments. C. Racial and Criminal Profiling Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words
Racial and Criminal Profiling - Assignment Example In Part III, this paper argues that there is substantial evidence that arrests are still being carried out on the basis of racial bias. Subsequently, it maintains that cultural factors have an impact on crime commitment. Introduction Racial and criminal profiling is one of the pertinent topics, as far as criminal justice is concerned. There are concerns about the use and interpretation of the used statistics. There are also the concerns that the profiled information of criminals always reveals certain flaws in the justice system. This leads to the advocacy of the affirmative action, which attracts various questions and issues. This seeks to respond to various questions regarding racial and criminal profiling such as the mentioned, as well the definition of various terminologies underlying the topic. PART I Response to part 1 This cautionary notice is given on the basis that criminal incidences are governed by a range of factors that are largely ignored based on such simple inferences . What this implies is that such data is likely to be biased in giving the information about the scene on the ground. For instance, the introduction of ranks in terms of criminal incidents to states may serve to reinforce the fact that people from certain states do not engage in crimes as those of other areas. In real sense, such an inference is biased. This alludes to how statistics can be misused or misinterpreted (Campbell, 1974). Response to part 1A Indeed, there are various issues that govern the dynamics of crime; hence, the statistics. One of the points that can be acknowledges is that different areas, cities, counties and states have different factors that shape criminal activities. Areas may differ from others in terms of cultural factors, political uniqueness, crime intervention strategies and unemployment rates, among others. Comparing the crime rates between areas often constrain the way these factors should be captured effectively. In some cases, it might create the all owance for statistics to be abused by authorities and other parties to advance their gains at the expense of others. For example, it can be used by some crime prevention authorities of some states to justify their effort, even when the comparison is hardly objective, as documented by Campbell (1974) on the misuse of statistics. PART II Response to part 2 Prejudice refers to a biased presentation of an event, subject or phenomenon. It is a treatment based on notions that are self or socially constructed, as opposed to the reality Gabbidon and Greene, 2005). For example, ideas will be considered to be prejudiced if they do not present the reality views Response to Part 3 Stereotypes are perceptions or notions that are labeled to certain groups of people but which are barely factual. For example, the notion that women are considered to be a weaker species compared to men is a stereotype (Gabbidon and Greene, 2005). Another example of stereotype is where youths are considered to be a gr oup of people that cannot be trusted. Response to part 4 Discrimination is the treatment of people based on the criterion informed by bias and which can be considered to be hardly objective. It has been argued that it is also possible to discriminate with objectivity, in what is referred to as positive discrimination, while negative discrimination is that which is

Breastfeeding in Public or in Uniform Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
Breastfeeding in Public or in Uniform - Essay Example However, this is difficult for military mothers to follow because of the strict conditions their job entails. The military must hold to a certain standard, which is acceptable, but denying the basic human feed to breastfeed goes against all understanding and compassion. Women in uniform should be allowed to breastfeed because almost every other occupation affords a mother the right to breastfeed. Breastfeeding is thought of as impolite by a large percentage of the population because it goes against common decency. Because of this, a certain stigma has been attached to mothers who breastfeed in public. Some mothers choose other means to feed their baby, and that is all well and good, but shouldnââ¬â¢t women have the right to choose whether to breastfeed or not? Military mothers should be treated no differently from breastfeeding women of any other occupation; actually, they should be given more rights because of the important job that they are doing. Allowing military women to breastfeed, where appropriate, would help them to feel safe in their job because they would know that their baby would be looked after and cared for. We now live in the 21st century, so there is no excuse for being kept back in the dark ages. In fact, it was in the 1990s that activism regarding breastfeeding led to women becoming aware of their rights to be able to breastfeed in public, and a number of laws were passed that protected this right (Terry). Why should breastfeeding military mothers be treated any differently? Military women should not be able to breastfeed because it would take away from the important jobs that they are involved in. The military is no place for a baby due to the high demands and pressure that is placed on almost everyone involved, and adding a baby to that mix would only worsen the situation. Also, the military is

Chapter 15 Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Chapter 15 - Assignment Example ensitization is a type of counterconditioning that educate and masters the client to remain calm and relaxed in the presence of imagined anxiety-inducing stimuli. This procedure consists of three steps and generally requires 10 sessions. The steps are: relaxation training by therapist, constructing an anxiety hierarchy of all related phobias, pairing relaxation with the situations described in the anxiety hierarchy (Maitland, 2008, p. 232). The person is made to imagine and rethink the perception about the situation that made him anxious. Thus, the person is exposed to the dreaded situation in which he has conditioned response. The systematic desensitization procedure stepwise reduces the intensity of series of responses by relaxation. This technique trains the individual to do psychological adjustment to the perceived threatening situation. It generates incompatible relaxation response which inactivates induced anxiety. To come out of phobia the individualââ¬â¢s irrational though t patterns causing stress, depression, and anxiety are inhibited. Finally, if possible therapist actually exposes his/her client to phobia provoking situation, to evaluate the positive response. This form of behavioral therapy is administered by a psychotherapist, but can be self-exercised and delivers positive outcome through regular practice (Richmond, 2009). This therapy is effective in treating ââ¬Å"free-floatingâ⬠anxiety, such as social phobia or agoraphobia, performance fears, fear of the dark, elevation phobias, fear of dangerous animals, acquired fears from personal experience etc. (Richmond,

International Business Management - Essay Example It would use it to provide insight into how the concept can be used and a critical example of how the theory can be invoked. In his book, Competitive Strategy, Porter identifies some important elements that are necessary for the attainment of competitive advantage. Porter stated that competitive advantage arises when a firm provides the highest level of value to consumers, and hence attract the highest prices from them. Porter argues that this can only be internalised if a firm identifies some external elements in the business environment and internalize them in order to form a strategy based on them. In order to attain competitive advantage, a business needs to examine the unique positions and capabilities of competitors and players in an industry. When this is done, a firm can identify a business strategy and after that, designs its functional systems. Industry analysis involves the examination of the key players and the key threats to a given firms quest to attain competitive advantage. This is done by examining five main forces of the industry. These elements are: Every industry exists to produce some kind of value to the wider society. The industry would always exist and there is some kind of balance and stability that comes up naturally as the industry thrives and grows. The risk of entry of potential competitors refers to the situation whereby some third party businesses can enter the industry and produce services that can change the dynamics. The risk of potential competitors entering a given industry is strongly related to the presence or absence of barriers in a given industry. If there are no barriers in the industry and new entrants can easily enter, and this would make the sector extremely problematic. This is because a firms competitive advantage can be easily threatened. However, if there are high barriers like high capital requirement and other regulations, then an

Hardwood is more applicable for engineering works, making of floors and high-quality furniture. They also have slower growth rates. Softwoods have a lower density and relatively cheap to in terms of cost. Softwoods have reduced fire resistance capacity. The woods also possess rugged grain patterns. Soft woods use is limited to low-quality furniture and is not preferred for engineering works (Bawa, 2009). By definition, OSB is a material of high mechanical properties, such that it becomes particularly suitable for use in heavy load-bearing applications especially in construction works and industries. Alan Greenspan - Essay Example Both had different ideologies as Greenspan advocated for the deregulation of the financial markets and born propagated for the government regulation. The main source of conflict arose as a result of the Over the counter OTC derivatives that were private contracts between major players on the Wall Street on particular bets. Born cited a high likelihood of fraud taking place. But based on Greenspan he believed that the market would identify the frauds and corrects itself. These sentiments were in line with his core principles of a free market. The assumptions of a free market commonly no government intervention, free flow of information of information, the actions of an individual have no effect on the market and finally, there are no barriers to entry and exit the market. This was the principles that Greenspan stood by up to his retirement but later confessed that the philosophy had major drawbacks. The hedge fund long-term capital management was characterized by large banks secretly investing large amounts of money on the over the counter derivatives at the Wall Street. The hedge fund was additionally invested by a majority of the in the know investors. These dealings were shrouded in secrecy and the government didnââ¬â¢t have any clue about them. They were as a result of the wall stock brokers setting complex mathematical formula that guaranteed the investors of a significant return on their investment. Finally, there was a meltdown as the Wall Street brokers were unable to handle the situation causing a collapse.

Raylicious Snack Social media - Assignment Example The following research paper analyzes the case of the Raylicious Snack Company, a business that does not have an online marketing campaign besides its website. The paper argues for why a business should adopt an online presence while also improving its present website. It looks at the merit of engaging in such a campaign and how it will help achieve its business objective of doing things right and becoming a leading snack retailer in the United States. It also looks at how those strategies will enable the company to attract a different customer base. The advent and convergence of technology have reduced communication and the cost of doing business. It is obvious that social networks and media affect our lives in all and every possible aspect. For example, they serve in spreading ideas, product marketing and promotion and brand visibility among others. Building an online presence and marketing strategy is an imperative move by any business that wishes to stay competitive while using technology to deliver products and services to its customers. The prospect of social media and having an online marketing campaign for the family owned business will avail access to the mass market, and it will enable the business to undertake a personalized approach towards product marketing. Images of Power and Authority in Art Essay Art has been used to portray figures of power and authority many times in history. Different cultures have different ways of portraying the image to have power and authority. One example of using art to portray images of power and authority is the Victory Stele of Naram-Sin. This was made to commemorate King Naram-Sin for his defeat of Lullubi. The King stands alone at the top, taller than everyone else. This shows that he is more powerful than anyone else. The King also wears a horned helmet that shows godliness. Celestial bodies shine upon him also showing him as a deity. His troops are lined up behind him in an orderly fashion, showing his control and also the discipline and organization of his forces. He and his army have complete control of the subdued enemy, showing that he and his army are superior. Art was also used to portray images of power and authority in the times of Ancient Egypt. The falcon covering his head is Horus, the god the sky and heavens. This implies the pharaohs divine status. Operation Management Facility Location Layout Marketing Essay
Operation Management Facility Location Layout Marketing Essay Q2. Visit the websites of three major organizations in your region. Find out where their facilities are located. Explain some factors which should be considered while evaluating location options for a facility because globalization has made consumers expect the best products at the lowest prices irrespective of where they are produced. Companies are under competitive pressure to engage in global production and service operations due to the rapid growth of global markets We all know that every organisation goes by the The Four Ps: Price, Product, Promotion and Place. Place refers generally to distribution, i.e., where your customer evaluates and ultimately receives your product or service. While this may not matter much for people who work virtually, or who run a business that drop-ships from a third party, its critical for restaurants, retailers, and even many service businesses. Ironically, while place is often the most permanent of the four Ps, its also often the most overlooked. So, Operations Management takes into consideration Facility location layout to decide on the problem of choosing the right place. Location is about more than just choosing a building. Perhaps for you, opening your business in your own town, or even your part of town, is a given. But consider the big picture: State Income taxes and sales taxes vary greatly from state to state, as do regulatory requirements. Is the state you live in friendly to entrepreneurship? To the specific type of business you want to run? Now might be the time to consider a move if it isnt, or possibly to open your business in a nearby state if you live near a state line. City Rent and other costs, availability of labour, taxes, regulations and government economic incentives can also vary greatly from city to city, even within the same state. Or maybe a small town is the perfect spot for your business. Part of town What kind of commute is involved? Is the part of town consistent with the image for your business? Rent varies greatly according to location. Location relative to streets, parking, and other businesses Do you need to be visible and/or easily accessible to pedestrian and automobile traffic? Will being close to businesses that draw a similar clientele help your business? For example, a sporting goods store or health food store might do very well next to a gym. Type of location Do you need office space, retail or warehouse? Retail is generally the most expensive of the three. There are many factors to consider in choosing the location for your business. While cost is obviously a major consideration, you must also think about your various constituencies. Is your location important to:- You? The space has to work for you, or it wont work. Remember, youre the one has to work there every day. Your customers? It also has to work for your customers, or it wont work. No customers = no business. Your employees? This issue may not be as critical at first, especially if you dont have any employees yet. But the ability to attract and keep good employees will be affected by your location. Strategic partners? While this may not seem like a big issue, the reality is that strategic partnerships happen more easily when the partners are local to each other. Why do you think that certain areas become hubs for certain types of business, such as Silicon Valley for the tech industry? Potential investors or buyers? You may not even be thinking about that yet, but potential investors looking at the long-term value of the business will see location as an important factor. Each of these groups has different concerns about the location: Cost Most obviously, can you afford it? Also, though, consider whether your customers and employees can afford it. For example, is there free parking, or is it expensive? Will higher rent cause you to charge higher prices to your customers? Thats not necessarily a bad thing, but a factor to consider. What about taxes? Income taxes and sales taxes vary greatly from state to state, and if you buy your own property, Convenience Is it easy to find? Is parking close by? Consider your clients. If youre dealing with pregnant mothers and the elderly, they may have a different concept of convenient. Safety This is an increasingly important issue for both customers and employees. Is the parking close by? Well lit? Is there security on the premises? Prestige Would a downtown address add credibility? Will wealthy clients favour a business in their own neighbourhood? Some places even provide virtual offices with prestigious addresses, such as Beverly Hills, Silicon Valley, or Manhattan. Traffic Retailers and restaurants love it, office workers dont. Facility requirements Do you have any special needs, such as high power consumption or specialized wiring? Do you need meeting space, but only occasionally? You might consider a shared office suite (often called executive suites) in that case. Zoning Many cities have very strict zoning requirements. Make sure your business is even allowed there before you sign the lease! A fully informed decision involves a fairly complex matrix of issues. Determine your priorities, keep an open mind about your options, do your research, and get ready to make one of the most important decisions about your business. WHAT IS FACILITY LOCATION LAYOUT? Facility Location is the right location for the manufacturing facility, it will have sufficient access to the customers, workers, transportation, etc. For commercial success, and competitive advantage following are the critical factors. Overall objective of an organization is to satisfy and delight customers with its product and services. Therefore, for an organization it becomes important to have strategy formulated around its manufacturing unit. A manufacturing unit is the place where all inputs such as raw material, equipment, skilled labours, etc. come together and manufacture products for customers. One of the most critical factors determining the success of the manufacturing unit is the location. Factors Influencing Facility Location: If the organization can configure the right location for the manufacturing facility, it will have sufficient access to the customers, workers, transportation, etc. For commercial success, and competitive advantage following are the critical factors: Customer Proximity: Facility locations are selected closer to the customer as to reduce transportation cost and decrease time in reaching the customer. Business Area: Presence of other similar manufacturing units around makes business area conducive for facility establishment. Availability of Skill Labour: Education, experience and skill of available labor are another important, which determines facility location. Free Trade Zone/Agreement: Free-trade zones promote the establishment of manufacturing facility by providing incentives in custom duties and levies. On another hand free trade agreement is among countries providing an incentive to establish business, in particular, country. Suppliers: Continuous and quality supply of the raw materials is another critical factor in determining the location of manufacturing facility. Environmental Policy: In current globalized world pollution, control is very important, therefore understanding of environmental policy for the facility location is another critical factor. Center of Gravity, Location Strategy: Location Strategy in Operations Management is an important factor to be considered. It is important because it helps in determining the place of manufacture. The place of manufacture needs to have certain qualities of features where manufacturing process takes place hassle-free. It is one such method or strategy which can determine the effectiveness of a location. Firms throughout the world are using the concepts and techniques in Operations Management to address the location decision because location greatly affects both fixed and variable costs. Location has a major impact on the overall risk and profit of the company. For instance, depending on the product and type of production or service taking place, transportation costs alone can total as much as 25% of the products selling price. That is, one-fourth of a firms total revenue may be needed just to cover freight expenses of the raw materials coming in and finished products going out. Other costs that may be influenced by location include taxes, wages, raw material costs and rents. Companies make location decisions relatively infrequently, usually because demand has out-grown the current plants capacity or because of changes in labour productivity, exchange rates, costs or local attitudes. Companies may also relocate their manufacturing or service facilities because of shifts in demographics and customer demand. Location options include Expanding an existing facility instead of moving Maintaining current sites while adding another facility elsewhere and Closing the existing facility and moving to another location. The location decision often depends on the type of business. For industrial location decisions, the strategy is usually minimizing costs, although innovation and creativity may also be critical. For retail and professional service organizations, the strategy focuses on maximizing revenue. Warehouse location strategy, however, may be driven by a combination of cost and speed of delivery. The objective of location strategy is to maximize the benefit of location to the firm. Location and costs: because location is such a significant cost and revenue driver, location often has the power to make or break a companys business strategy. Key multinationals in every major industry, from automobiles to mobile phones, now have or are planning a presence in each of their major markets. Location decisions to support a low cost strategy require particularly careful considerations. Once management is committed to a specific location, many costs are firmly in place and difficult to reduce. For instance, if a new factory location is in a region with high energy costs, even a good management with an outstanding energy strategy is starting at a disadvantage. Management is in similar bind with its human resource strategy if labor in the selected location is expensive, ill-trained or has a poor work ethic. Consequently, hard work to determine an optimal facility location is a good investment. Location and Innovation: When creativity, innovation and research and development investments are critical to the operations strategy, the location criteria may change from a focus on costs. When innovation is the focus, four attributes seem to affect overall competitiveness as well as innovation. The presence of high-quality and specialized inputs such as scientific and technical talent As environment that encourages investment and intense local rivalry. Pressure and insight gained from a sophisticated local market. Local presence of related and supporting industries. A workplace that has carefully arranged its layout will allow for a more effective and efficient workflow and produce its good or services to a high standard. There are three types of workflow layouts that managers can choose from: Process layout: arranged in departments (e.g., hospitals). Product layout: production line (e.g., a car assembly plant). Fixed-position layout: building a large item (e.g., jumbo jet). CONSUMER BEHAVIOUR AND DESIRE: Consumer behaviour refers to the mental and psychological process that goes in the mind of buyer so as to choose one product or service and not the other. In the first stage of buying, the consumer identifies and need and selects a product or service that will satisfy the need. On selecting the product, they estimate amount they are willing to spend on it. Just before buying the product or service, the consumer analyzes the different price on offer. Here are the factors that influence consumer choices: 1. Culture Culture is the way of life of a community or group. In order to fit in a cultural group, a consumer must follow the written and unwritten cultural norms. For instance, for your to fit in an Islamic community, you are cannot consume pork. To fit among the youth in any community, you are expected to dress like them. In other words, cultural norms define what a consumer can or cannot buy. 2. Lifestyle Your lifestyle is generally determined by the amount of money you make. If you make more cash, you are expected to keep to a certain lifestyle. Lifestyle influence consumer behaviour directly by the fact that if you earn less, you cannot afford to buy items which are above your class. On the other hand, if you are from a higher class, you will feel like your class is lowered by consuming cheap products or services. 3. Motivation Motivation is what drives a person to consider one need to be more important that the other. The more important need demands to be satisfied sooner than the others. Motivation is powered by different physiological, biological and social needs. If you are motivated by the need to feel important, you will generally buy products or services that feed this need. 4. Personality Personality is a set of characters that are deeply embedded in a persons mind. Personality differs from person to person and also place and time. Personality determines what you eat, wear, drive or watch. In simple terms, personality determines all your decisions including your attitude towards different products. 5. Age Age influences consumer behaviour in a rather direct way. For instance, the needs of a 6-year old are not similar to those of a teenager. Consumer needs are basic in childhood but become complex in teenage and middle ages. In old age, consumer needs go back to basic. Furthermore, the psychological needs of people at different age groups are different thus the difference in consumer behaviour. 6. Perception Perception is the prevailing popular opinion about a product or service at a particular time. Perceptions change with time. Consumer can have the same need but buy totally different brands due to perception. In the past, mobile phones were only for communication- calling and texts. This perception has since changed; mobile phones have a variety of functions. Perception is also influence by media reports and advertising. Just after the Oil Spill at the Gulf of Mexico, perceptions about BP the oil company were really bad. **************
